meg ryan naturelle In honor of Independence Day, today we spotlight Margaret Corbin, an American hero who bravely fought for our country’s freedom in the Revolutionary War. Margaret joined her husband at the Battle at Fort Washington on November 16, 1776, aiding her husband and another military member with loading and firing a cannon on the battlefield. When her husband was killed during that battle, Margaret jumped into action and began loading and firing the cannon alone. Margaret had excellent aim and was soon targeted by the British. Although, the British eventually won the battle at Fort Washington, Margaret’s cannon was the last one to stop firing.

After she recovered, Corbin joined the Invalid Regiment at West Point. Corbin was eventually the first woman to receive a military pension
