This week’s “It’s a Movement” blog is authored by Katie McKenzie.  Check out how she breaks down her aspirations to meet mini-goals on a daily basis and accomplishes tasks that seem too far out of reach at first.

For several years (yes, years), two questions haunted me:

  1. What is my passion or purpose in life?
  2. Once I know what that is, how the heck do I get there?

If you’re still stuck on how to answer the first question, you are not alone. I had to do some major soul searching before I had my passion epiphany. The most important thing you can do is take some uninterrupted time to get clear about what success means to YOU. What does it look like? Write it down. Start building goals from that idea. [Note: Here’s a quick guide for goal writing.]

If you already know the answer to question #1, congratulations! I felt relieved when it finally clicked for me, but that relief was quickly replaced by question #2.  How do I actually get there?

Once you know what success looks like, start thinking about where your passions lie. What are you excited about every day? For a little inspiration, check out this awesome post written by one of our members, Kim Grant. It’ll help visually connect the things that drive you.

I’m a dreamer by nature, so I set some lofty goals for myself without really knowing the first step to achieving them.  I don’t believe any goal is out of reach, but I do believe you need a realistic action plan to attain them.

Enter: The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. Olson’s book is the road map I use every day to accomplish my goals and live my passion. In fact, I used it to write this post. His principle is a recipe for success in whatever you hope to accomplish.

The concept is simple: Small, daily actions compounded over time yield big results. Any goal, including landing a job, losing weight, or building a business, can be accomplished using this method. Each goal only requires a little bit of action.

Let’s look at an example of what I mean. At AinA, one of our main focuses is women in the workplace. So, your goal may be searching for your first full-time job or reaching for a different one. Based on The Slight Edge principles, I’ll ask this question: What is one simple action you can take today that will put you closer to landing that job? Perhaps it’s editing your resume. Or maybe you need to draft a new a cover letter. When’s the last time you updated your LinkedIn account? Have you considered setting up an informational interview?  What if you did one of those actions every single day until an offer letter was in your inbox? Can you imagine what will result from that kind of consistent effort?

The best part about this concept is that it makes seemingly overwhelming goals manageable. You don’t have to know the entire plan. Just start with one small step for a few minutes a day and stay consistent. It really is that simple.

Your goals will undoubtedly change as you grow and gain more life experience, but you can always come back to this principle to achieve them.

It only requires a little bit of action.
